I did fairly well with last week’s goals, except that editing Chapter 2 is taking much longer than expected. This week I’m switching up gears a bit because I need to focus more on research than writing because I’m presenting at a conference next month. With that in mind, here are this week’s goals:

  • Work on editing Chapter 3 (was Ch. 2 until reorganization last week) for an hour every day – If at all possible, I’d like to have this finished by the end of March.
  • GIS Projects: land cover classification, slope and elevation, and create validation file – all tasks I need to work on for the presentation next month.
  • Exercise 2 times this week – going to the gym Tuesday and either Thursday or Friday.
  • Knit Springtime Bandit – try to make progress.
  • Laundry – trip to landromat.

Hopefully this week goes well and I make good progress on my research so I can add it to the presentation.

Another Monday and a new week’s worth of goals!! But first, a recap of how I did with last week’s goals.

  • Write tectonics, soil, and land use sections – COMPLETED!!
  • GIS: work on land cover classification & do analysis on sectors based on slope and aspect – I worked on the land cover classification, although it still has to be improved, but didn’t touch slope or aspect.
  • Start slides for Spring Symposium presentation – didn’t do this and am not sure I’m going to try to present at the Spring Symposium, which may be a time sink that I can’t afford.
  • Exercise 2 times this week – I went to the gym and rode the bike twice last week and went on a walk yesterday.
  • Finish knitting Bousta Scarf – Knitting is completed, but still need to weave in the many, many ends and block this scarf.
  • Read about how to do editing – Didn’t do this, so I need to work it in with this week’s editing of Chapters 1 & 2.

An overall productive week and not just with my knitting! And now for this week’s goals.

  • Edit Chapters 1 & 2 into a 2nd draft – my big project for this week. I’ve broken this down into chunks by day to keep myself from getting overwhelmed.
  1. Monday – Chapters 1 & 2 overall organization (sections); resolve dating issues (convert all to B.C. and A.D.); and make sure all references are properly linked.
  2. Tuesday – Edit Chapter 1 (this is a short chapter that introduces the entire thesis and will probably change quite a bit once I’m finished, so I’m not spending too much time on it).
  3. Wednesday – Edit Chapter 2: Geology.
  4. Thursday – Edit Chapter 2: Climate, etc.
  5. Friday – Edit Chapter 2: Land Use.
  6. Saturday and Sunday – as needed.
  • GIS: land cover classification and create validation file – I got a lead on another type of land cover classification that I’d like to try. If I have time, I’ll also try to work on slope and aspect.
  • Work on slides for Spring Symposium/AAG presentation – need to get started on this!!
  • Exercise 2 times this week – same as previous weeks, although getting in another geocaching walk would be wonderful.
  • Knitting – weave in ends and block Bousta scarf; work on Lace Ribbon scarf.
  • Spinning – try to spin for 15 minutes every day; need to work on developing spinning muscle knowledge.
  • Create 1 outfit – I’ve long felt that I need to improve my wardrobe and sense of personal style. Although I’m spending this year working on my thesis (mostly) from home, I felt it last year when I taught both fall and spring semesters and struggled through dressing the part of professor. In a thread on the Anthropologie fan group on Ravelry about “How do you shop? and What makes a great wardrobe?” were some links that I poured over yesterday in between georeferencing maps. Two of my favorite links were The Essentials of a Well-Balanced Wardrobe and Academichic. Essentials lists items that belong in Basic, Staple, Statement Pieces, Evening Standards, and Showstoppers categories to serve as the basis of a wardrobe. I’m happy to say that I have most of the staples, but am lacking in most of the other categories. The only thing left out of these lists was a list of essential shoes. Academichic is a blog written by 3 Ph.D students at a midwestern university that has been online for over a year now. I spend quite a bit of time going over their archives yesterday (and this morning) and favoriting pictures of outfits I liked on flickr. Their outfits are inspiring and they also have good tutorials on color. Plus they have a wonderful list on “Comfortable Yet Chic Shoes” that I’m going to base shoe selection on in the future. In their honor and to get myself out of my jeans and hoodie rut, I’m going to try to make one “outfit” each week, which I’ll probably post here.

Well, I have a busy week planned for myself, so I’ll wrap this up and get to work.

I’m a little late posting my recap of last week’s goals and the list of what I’m trying to accomplish this week because I’ve been feeling a bit of a let down. I have a few big things coming up that are worrying me, so I’m trying to work through my anxiety, but am having trouble staying motivated. One of those big projects is that I wanted to have a (2nd) draft of Chapters 1 and 2 of my thesis to give my advisor in February, which obviously hasn’t happened. I’m also presenting at a large conference in April (booked my flight and hotel last week), but have quite a bit of work to do so I don’t end up babbling about nothing. Plus I need to get the paperwork started to hopefully get funding to cover at least part of the flight and hotel by my grad school, but not sure if there are funds because of the financial crunch.

The only part of my life that felt really successful last week was in knitting. I completed 2 projects during the Olympics and can claim gold medals for completing those projects. (Not quite the same as when I won a footrace in the stadium at Olympia and then fell and scraped up my elbows, hips, and knees, but just as satisfying.) Here are my completed projects:

  • Write climate and vegetation sections of Chapter 2 – I wrote both of these sections, plus a short section on hydrology. COMPLETED!!

I really slipped on exercising last week, so I’m going to try to make sure that I go at least twice this week. The thesis research and writing went fairly well, but I’m concerned about editing my first draft that I’ve been working on for weeks now, into a second draft that I can hand to my advisor (more about this below).

Here’s this week’s goals:

  • Write tectonics, soil, and land use sections – the final sections to complete this first draft!!
  • GIS: work on land cover classification & do analysis on sectors based on slope and aspect – need to work on analyzing survey area to see if there are trends of artifact density based on slope and aspect.
  • Start slides for Spring Symposium presentation – if I want to present in my grad school’s Spring Symposium, I have to apply (with slides included!!) by March 15. I’m hoping to use this as a warm-up for the big conference presentation I’m giving in April.
  • Exercise 2 times this week – I backslid last week, but need to exercise at least twice this week.
  • Finish knitting Bousta Scarf – I’m almost finished with this scarf and would like to have the knitting completed, ends woven in, and the scarf blocked this week.
  • Read about how to do editing – Much like I was reading about writing, I’m going to do some reading this week on editing to help me go from my first draft to a draft I can give to my advisor.

Hello. It’s another Monday and time to assess how I did with last week’s goals and lay out my goals for the upcoming week.

Goals from last week:

  • Write Medieval section of Chapter 2 – I wrote this section, but upon finishing it up on Friday, decided to reorganize Chapter 2. This means that the sections I’ve been writing for the last month are going to be streamlined into one section, instead of making up half of the chapter.
  • Notes for Modern section – not completed; see note above.
  • Collect information about IKAP focus for each historical section – I have the data for the Ottoman Period (1716) and possibly Venetian (c. 1700), but need to acquire data for Late Bronze Age (Linear B?) and modern periods. The modern data may necessitate research in Athens this summer to look at the agricultural census.
  • GIS – did determine what I need to finish for erosion modeling and the list is frighteningly long.
  • Greek language – finally completed.
  • Exercise 3 times – Biked at the gym two times. Did not work out with weights.
  • File 2009 taxes – completed and accepted by the various institutions.
  • Knitting Olympics/Ravelympics – completed shawl and blocking!!!

  • Write climate and vegetation sections of Chapter 2 – I have most of the notes I need for these two sections (working on climate notes today) and should be able to get them written this week.
  • Research settlement and land use in study area – going to focus on Bronze Age data, although will work on other time periods as I have time.
  • GIS
  1. re-digitize villages – need to outline villages more closely
  2. work on land cover classification – must work on getting this done if I’m going to get to erosion modeling
  3. derive slope and aspect – simple operations using the DEM; should be summarized by square and sector
  • Exercise 3 times this week – more biking
  • Knit 5 repeats of fishnet lace and garter sections – 75 rows total (15 rows per section x 5 sections); this is a scarf knit with laceweight yarn, which is new for me. The laceweight yarn is proving to be a challenge so far, but I think I’m getting the hang of it.
  • Greek: review colors and listen to HAU Modern Greek lesson 1. Introduction – adding a new source of Greek lessons.

Another week with a variety of goals, hopefully achievable before next Monday.

Another week, another list of goals for this week. First, let’s look at how last week’s goals went.

  • Go running 3 times – completed, although I decided to try using a bike at the gym and not run to keep me motivated

  • Learn July 09 (Groceries) and Feb 08 (Fruits and vegetables) Greek vocab words – not completed; the first week I haven’t hit my Greek language goal

  • Write for at least 10 minutes every day – I wrote blog posts to help fill in, but still did not write on Sunday.

Goals for this week, February 15-21

  • Write Medieval section of Chapter 2 – I have half the notes taken, and would like to have this written by Thursday at the latest
  • Notes for Modern section – at least a start on the notes
  • Collect information about IKAP focus for each historical section – I need to add a paragraph to each of the sections I’ve been working on focusing on what was happening in the IKAP survey area. This will be added in when I do the first edit in a couple of weeks
  • GIS – work on slope, aspect, etc. and determine what I still need to get for erosion modeling
  • Greek language – learn July09 (Groceries) and Feb08 (Fruits and vegetables) vocabulary words. Repeat from last week.
  • Exercise 3 times – Biking at gym plus work with weights
  • File 2009 taxes – has been postponed for last 2 weeks and needs to be completed finally
  • Knitting Olympics/Ravelympics – complete 2nd time through Lace Chart A

Those are my goals for the week. I did a pretty good job of completing last week’s goals, so hopefully this week will go as well.

Recap of goals from last week (Feb. 1-7):

  • Write prehistory and ancient sections of Chapter 2 – 1/2 finished because wrote prehistory section. Ancient section to be written this week.
  • Read “Writing Your Dissertation in 15 Minutes a Day” – again half finished, but will finish reading this week.
  • Model terrain, watershed, and streams in GIS – didn’t open up GIS program at all last week. Total fail in working on this goal.
  • Go running 3 times – 2/3 complete, will try to run all 3 times this next week.
  • Finish scarf for friend – COMPLETE and she loved the scarf!!
  • Learn Oct09 Greek vocab (Useful Verbs) and review verb conjugations – complete; to be fair, I know and use most of the verbs, although this helped me remember exactly what each one means.

As you can see, there were few completed goals and the goals that were completed were non-thesis related. I think I made the writing goal too big (no more than 1 section per week from now on when I have to read and take notes for the material) and I didn’t feel well early in the week, which slowed me down (and kept me from running all 3 times last week). Let’s look at the goals I’ve set for this week.

  • Write ancient section of chapter 2 – started on the reading and notes this morning. If When I get this section completed, I’ll start reading/taking notes for the medieval section.
  • GIS: check roads and maquis layers I digitized last month and create drainage basins – fairly self-explanatory.
  • Go running 3 times – week 4 of the “Couch to 5K” plan.
  • Create weight training plan and lift 3 times – Probably try to do the lifting when at the gym/rec center for running. I found a website with training plans, exercises, and worksheets for weight training.
  • Knit 4 blocks on Bousta scarf – one block equals 32 rows in a single color, so four blocks will be 128 rows with 4,608 stitches total (36 stitches per row). Really a small knitting goal and one I’ll probably surpass now that the scarf is going well.
  • File 2009 taxes – something I started last week and would like to finish this week.
  • Learn July 09 (Groceries) and Feb 08 (Fruits and vegetables) Greek vocab words – some of these words I know, but some I’ve had trouble remembering.
  • Laundry – which means hauling dirty laundry down 3 flights of stairs, into the car, then to the laundromat. Reverse trip with clean laundry.
  • Write for at least 10 minutes every day – I didn’t write anything Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, which was a mistake. This week I’m going to at least write a blog post over the weekend to keep myself in writing mode.

Hopefully this week’s goals go better than last week and I keep making progress on my thesis. Because that’s what really matters.

I’ve had a very productive week. Writing out my goals really helped me focus and get work done. The goals weren’t too large so that I couldn’t get them done in a week. The only goal I didn’t finish was doing the landscape and watershed modeling in GIS. I did get the holes and peaks in the DEM taken care of and should be able to finish this goal next week.

Speaking of next week’s goals:

  • Write prehistory and ancient sections of Ch. 2 – This includes outlining the prehistory section and taking notes for the ancient section.
  • Read “Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day” – Checked the book out from the library and just need to read it. I’ve seen the book recommended and am interested in what it has to say about editing drafts of text.
  • Model terrain, watershed, and streams in GIS – Repeat of last week’s goal, but with DEM already created and in good condition.
  • Get climate/weather data for 1998-2006 for IKAP area – In the near future (weeks away) I’ll need to write about present day climate. This data will also be useful when I get to doing the erosion modeling.
  • Go running 3 times – I’d like to work on my personal fitness and am going to try running again (Couch to 5K plan). I got an ID card to the community fitness center and a 20-visit pass to use the running track (14 laps to a mile – ouch), so no excuses for not running.
  • Create a weight training plan – Checked out another book from the library about weight training for women. I’m going to read through the book, set my goals (mostly arms and upper body so I’ll be stronger for excavating this summer), and plan out the weight training to start the week after.
  • Finish scarf for friend – I started a scarf yesterday for a friend (very fast pattern knitting lengthwise) and plan to have the scarf finished by Thursday when I’ll be meeting her for lunch.
  • Learn Oct 09 Greek vocab (Useful Verbs) and review verb conjugations – Need to keep working on that Greek!!

I purchased a Learn to Spin Kit online yesterday from The Bellwether. I’ve been thinking about learning how to spin for almost a year now and I finally decided to do it. I’m very tempted to purchase the book Respect the Spindle, but will wait until I’ve tried out spinning with the kit I bought. Looking forward to learning a new skill.
